Good luck beans for New Year's

I'm sort of ambivalent about black eyed peas.  They don't really excite my taste buds, yet for many people, a New Year's meal is not complete without this good luck symbol (read more about the tradition here).  If you're like me and feel "eh" about any black eyed peas that don't include the singer Fergie, here are two unique recipes to serve:
