Remember that interview I did a few weeks ago where I said I "couldn't give a fig" about exercising? Not only do I not like to exercise for exercise's sake, apparently pulling out that little idiom is all it took for me to think of a very specific food for a solid week. Unsurprisingly, that food was figs.
If your only exposure to this fall fruit is in Newton form, than it's time to try something new! Figs are wonderfully flavorful when they're not in a processed and packaged cookie. We're almost at the end of fresh fig season, but I did see some in the store as late as last week. Start your fig journey with these five recipes - two savory, two sweet, and one cocktail. Any would make a sophisticated addition to your Thanksgiving offerings.
Sweet
Financiers are rich little Parisian Pastries. See the original recipe here, and its figged-out variation here (Did I just make up a new phrase? I think so...)
I love the layered look of these elegant Fig and Wafer Pastries.
Savory
For a delicious appetizer, serve Baked Goat Cheese Stuffed Figs (blue cheese would be a great alternative!)
More goat cheese, but this time with some steak - Stuffed Figs with Sirloin.
Sipped
Figs in a glass? But of course! This drink pictured above is inspired by the Fig Cocktail at Natasha's in Portland, ME. If vodka isn't your poison of choice, try this one, made of figs and bourbon.

I never cook or bake with figs (not sure why really). Those little financiers look delicious! As do the goat cheese stuffed figs. Hmmmm now I might have to see if there are still a few figs around...
Love these ideas and love figs!
Thanks, ladies. I'm totally craving these financiers. Maybe if I snap my fingers I can make them appear?.......
No, didn't work. Darn.
