When I was growing up, I found more use out of the bubble wrap that carefully protected the Waterford Crystal then the champagne flute itself. Catching my gaze as I eyed my sister’s presents, my mother would always reassure me that one day I would come to appreciate the flutes. For every occasion since I was thirteen my Godmother, Aunt Rosemarie, has given me a champagne flute. Too young to use them, the flutes remained in their boxes gathering dust.
It wasn’t until I turned 21 that I finally realized the immense uniqueness of the gifts. My love for entertaining and the desire to show off the champagne flutes resulted in a ladies cocktail party at my home. Hours before my guests arrived, I carefully unwrapped and washed the untouched stem wear. I was seeing the crystal with new eyes, gently running my fingers over the modern pattern, “Carina,” that Rosemarie had picked out so many years before. I was finally feeling the impact of the special tradition shared between my Godmother and me. With a full set of 12 flutes, I was able to serve champagne to my friends in my very own Waterford Crystal stem wear at a mere age of 21. It was a remarkable feeling that I only have Rosemarie to thank for.
As I begin to pack up my belongings and prepare to move out of my parent’s house and into my first apartment, I can’t help but imagine the beauty and sophistication the flutes will bring to my new home. I hope that one day I will be able to give the gift of a Waterford Crystal champagne flute to someone knowing the bliss it brings first hand.
