Quantcast

The fashionable foursome from Manhattan returns to the big screen in Sex and the City 2!  As you've no doubt seen in the previews, Carrie and Co. wind up in a decadent desert resort in the United Arab Emirates.  While the irony of the edgy SATC ladies traipsing about the super-conservative UAE is not lost on me, I've decided to suspend belief and create a feminine party with Middle Eastern flair!

Included here are decorating tips, menu suggestions, and printable signs...everything you need to create a pre-movie party for your girlfriends.

First, let's examine the decor...

I created the plain pink fabric backdrop by fashioning a pocket out of duct tape, and running a length of red nylon rope through the pocket (it's easier if you position the rope first, then tape down the pocket).  I then hung the installation between two 3M Command Hooks, making sure  the tape side faced the wall.

Next, I taped another length of rope to a dowel rod, covered it with complimentary fabric, and attached the free ends of rope to the hooks.  Votive lanterns were then hung from the covered rod.

Finally, I added depth by draping a third pattern over the pink curtain...this also hid the hooks!

Let's dress up the space with a few extras...

For this party, we're sitting on the floor!  Gather Oriental rugs and layer them at angles so each pattern can be seen.  Use low pieces of furniture (or milk crates) as tables, and cover them with fun fabrics.  Create cases for lounging pillows out of the same fabrics, or select pillows of a complementary color.

Middle Eastern weather is not terribly flower-friendly, so here we inject a bit of NYC style.  I selected chic white calla lilies with hydrangeas and placed them in a Middle Eastern style vase (actually...this is a candle holder! If you decide to use the same, keep flowers fresh with floral tubes filled with water.)

At brunch, Samantha reveals her secret to looking young: vitamins, and lots of them! Fill a day-of-the-week pill box will orange Tic-Tacs, cinnamon Altoids, and plain Altoids to get the same hilarious effect. Dressing to theme can sometimes be a bit much. Instead, provide guests with a selection of fun bangles to decorate their arms (these are from "the Bangle Bar" at Cost Plus World Market).

Burn a little incense at the party entrance - this sets the mood without masking the food!

Remember this quote from the first movie? It's so true, isn't it?  These quotes (available for printing below) were placed into gold 3x5 frames which were then embellished with pink and gold notions from the sewing and craft stores.

And now for food and drink!

I must admit, when started developing this party, I toyed with the idea of introducing a new cocktail or perhaps putting a spin on an old favorite.  In the end, I decided to go with the classic Cosmopolitan to bring a bit of Manhattan to the desert! Provide your guests with traditional snacks such as dates and almonds.
To dress up the almonds, serve Cocoa Roast Almonds.
If plain dates seem dull, try them stuffed with goat cheese.

Above - Two moments from the movie memorialized in dessert: Carrie dons a tux for Stanford's wedding, and Charlotte's cupcake-baking madness comes to a screeching halt when Lily applies her red-frosting coated hands to Charlotte's white skirt (couldn't you just die?).

Left - Surely Magda gets a night off now and then. I'm guessing our favorite nose-to-the-grindstone lawyer would be just fine with some store-bought hummus and wheat pita.

Above Right - Serve a refreshing mint tea along with chicken kebobs, falafel, and lamb burgers.

These are pdf files. Right-click to save and print onto white cardstock for best results. The food labels look especially cute when attached to a lollipop stick!

Enjoy!

We took a break from shooting and I turned around to see someone had crashed the set!
